Michael Donohue
Michael (Mike) Donohue is a fibre, crochet artist with a deep-seated reverence for the natural world. Having an early interest in arts and crafts, building and creating, he continued to study and practice traditional “fine art” throughout his life and into higher education. However, it wasn’t until the COVID-19 pandemic that his practice shifted into to fibre arts.
Michael’s work is an ongoing exploration of our connection to nature. Through use of technique, texture, and colour - all wrought in natural fibres - his work centers around a profound fascination with florals; how we experience and interact with the environment around us.
His use of freeform crochet – crochet without the use of any pattern and without limitation – is a continually evolving and growing, organic process. The organic nature of crochet is ideally suited to the growth and development of petals, stems, vines, and leaves; and each stitch is a breath of life into his creations.
Michael’s love of the craft has been shared through the ongoing teaching of workshops and classes, community engagement, and in exhibition.
