Thanks to Northumberland89.7 Radio for this interview for the show Word on the Hills. It was originally aired in November 2021.

“Today we are having a different kind of discussion at Word on the Hills: we hear about two Artists’ Residencies one in the Haliburton Highlands and one in Prince Edward County. What is a residency and what does it offer the artists and writers who are so lucky as to be granted one? Ruth E Walker is the co-chair of the Management Committee of the Hall’s Island Artist Residency in Haliburton County. Dr. Jean Baird is an administrator for the Al Purdy A Frame Residency and sophie anne edwards, an interdisciplinary artist, is the current resident at the Al Purdy A Frame House. Sophie was long listed this week for the CBC poetry prize. They will tell about the residencies from their own experience.”

October 2021:

HALLS ISLAND ARTIST RESIDENCY INDIGENOUS ARTIST SCHOLARSHIP

We are so pleased that for our 2022 residency, we have a $2,000 scholarship available to an indigenous artist. This one-time scholarship is meant to support an indigenous artist during their stay at Halls Island.

Artists must complete both the general application as well as the scholarship application.

Please visit our Apply page for further detail.

July 2021:

The Halls Island Artist Residency is pleased to have been awarded a one-time grant from TD Bank's Ready Challenge Fund to help support the residency as we return to full strength post-COVID. Many artists have suffered more than a year of hardship due to pandemic restrictions and cancellations. The grant will fund a stipend for each of this year’s 13 attending artists, as well as artists attending next summer’s residency. While there is no charge for artists to attend the residency, this funding will help them with the cost of transportation and food.

The committee is especially pleased the TD Bank’s Ready Challenge Fund grant will also help the residency move forward with our commitment to offer a scholarship in 2022 for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Colour) artists. Details will be announced later this fall.

June 2021: Halls Island Artist Residency will be welcoming 13 artists over 8 sessions this summer. Our artists are looking forward to this space and time to spend on their artistic practice. Please take a look at the full list and biographies on our 2021 Artists page.

The Halls Island Artist Residency safe re-opening is partially funded by a grant from the Haliburton County Development Corporation. This support is greatly appreciated.

April 2021: Halls Island Artist Residency was a recipient of a Local Initiatives Project grant from the Haliburton County Development Corporation. The funds will be used for enhanced cleaning and re-opening costs as we work towards a safe re-opening in June 2021.

April 23, 2020: We were excited to hear that one of our 2019 artists, Anna Swanson, was just honored with first prize at the SPARKS Literary Contest, Poetry, for her poem " I am Writing a Spell for your Nervous System". Anna White took the poem and set it to underwater footage, part of which was shot during their residency at Halls Island Artist Residency. We are thrilled to have played a small part in this creative work! Congratulations!
